1 INTRODUCTION
Since 1990s, companies have had a growing interest in developing social and environmental responsi-
bility measures, after several scandal and disasters that damaged their public image (Velte, 2017). Nowa-
days, it is usual than companies publish corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports along with the financial
statements (Fernández-Gago, Cabeza-García, & Nieto, 2018; Sial et al., 2018). In fact, this practice is a re-
quirement to obtain the confidence of capital markets and to accompli sh the goals of Agenda 2030 of the
United Nations. The firm’s sustainability is increasingly valued by investors, to the extent that there are
market indices that include only the most sustainable companies.
On the other hand, board of directors establishes the company strategies and, therefore, the composi-
tion and features of the boardrooms are determining factors in the activities and policies applied by the
companies (Pletzer, Nikolova, Kedzior, & Voelpel, 2015). Therefore, considering that women have different
education and backgrounds than men, the percentage of women on boards of directors is considered one of
the main drivers of the CSR (Terjesen, Barbosa Couto, & Morais Francisco, 2016). In addition, let us remem-
ber that gender equality is the fifth Sustainable Development Goal of de United Nations. The effective rela-
tionship between the percentage of women on boards of directors and the CSR of companies is one of the
research topics being developed recently. Hence, the interest in conducting a literature review that is useful
for detecting trends and future lines of research.
1.!METHODOLOGY
The methodology consists of a bibliometric analysis of scientific documents investigating the influence
of women directors on corporate social responsibility. For this purpose, a bibliographic search was carried
out in the Scopus database, us ing as a filter in the sections article, title, summary and keywords, the concepts of
corporate social responsibility and women, together with “board of directors or boardroom or corporate board”. A
total of 122 documents were obtained, corresponding to the period 1991-2020.
The Excel spreadsheet and the VOSviewer and SciMAT software were used to analyse the different bib-
liometric indicators and clusters related to production by year, category, country, keywords, authors and
citations.
2.!RESULTS
The first art icle that related the company's social responsiveness to the presence of women on board of
directors dates from 1991 (Coffey & Fryxell, 1991). However, it has not been until 2016 when this relationship
has really started to interest, experiencing a development in the year 2020 (see Figure 1). Therefore, it is a
topic that is still under-researched and with future prospects.
