CAPÍTULO 28
POSSIBILITIES FOR DEVELOPING A PERSON-
CENTERED BUSINESS STRATEGY

1. INTRODUCTION
An analysis of the different business models applied by the so-called
person-centered companies allows us to identify aspects of the company
management that can help people to fulfil themselves as individuals.
This work provides a study of four paradigms, two based on the Social
Doctrine of the Church, specifically Companionship of Works and
Economy of Communion, and two others emerging from different mo-
tivations: Nuevo Estilo de Relaciones (NER) and the Teal Model. The
research takes a dual approach, theoretical and anthropological, to iden-
tify relevant aspects in the application of person-centred management
models and highlight the implications that emerge from the anthropo-
logical foundations that underpin each model.
2. OBJECTIVES
There are currently several business proposals which seek these objec-
tives, aiming to demonstrate that alternatives do exist. The purpose of
this article is two-fold. Firstly, to offer an overview of four of these al-
ternative paradigms, extracting general conclusions about the character-
istics of a person-centred business model. The second part of the study
will analyse the economic rationale and anthropological implications of
these models, distinguishing between those which follow the Social
Doctrine of the Church and those which do not. We will conclude with
a series of brief conclusions.

3. METHODOLOGY
The first step to take is to analyze four models of the business enterprise
which, for different reasons, offers a new form of person-centered man-
agement. Two of these proposals arose within the framework of the So-
cial Doctrine of the Church (SDC) and explicitly manifest their adhesion
to it, specifically the Companionship of Works and Economy of Com-
munion. The other two initiatives, with different points of departure,
share the same goal to transform the business enterprise by placing the
person at the center. Specifically, we will review the Teal paradigm, de-
veloped by Laloux and the company model of the NER Group (Nuevo
Estilo de Relaciones), developed by Koldo Saratxaga. This review will
help demonstrate that companies can seek objectives beyond mere
profit. Among all the existing ones, we have selected these models be-
cause of the impact they have, the significant number of companies that
adhere to these models and above all for the theoretical and practical
interest of their proposals.
To understand fully the differences between these different paradigms,
we will begin by briefly outlining the principles the SDC recommends
for companies that seek the common good by centering on people.
4. RESULTS
The general principles proposed by the SDC, in terms of business, are
derived directly from the conception of the person defended by the
Church. The third chapter of the CSDC, entitled “The Human Person
and Human Rights” is a long chapter which sets out the Magisterium of
the Church in this question.
The anthropological basis of the Magisterium establishes that the human
being, unique and unrepeatable, possesses two fundamental characteris-
tics. That is, as a physical being with a body, and a spiritual being with
a soul. Spirituality allows the person to be open to transcendence and
through their intelligence to discover the most profound truths. The
unity of body and soul is profound, constituting a single nature. This
openness to transcendence implies an openness to the infinite and to all
