THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF THE UNDROP

1. INTRODUCTION
Despite their current importance, European and north Africa national
statistics are not therefore able to determine how many people are work-
ing in mobile pastoralism or how many animals they have502.
This chapter will delve into the current normative body and some public
policies relevant to pastoralists in the Mediterranean Europe and North-
ern Africa. These activity have been long developed in the region and
the adoption of the Declaration has brought new perspectives to their
regulation at regional and national levels. Moreover, these two groups
have an important definitional element in common: mobility. Moving
is at the core of pastoralists’ livelihoods. In this sense, this chapter aims
at discussing to what extent the UNDROP503 has taken this element in
account while inquiring how new standards may contribute to increase
rural people mobility within and across borders.
In terms of organization, this chapter will first look at the normative
and policy developments of pastoralists in the region. Then, the
