Abstract
Thepurposeofthisarticleistoanalyzethefilm"Roma"byAlfonsoCuarón(Mexico,
2018)asacinematographicresourceforthedebateonhumanrights.Focusingon
theurbanandrurallandscapesportrayedinthefilm,wewillfollowthedailylifeof
Cleo, the central character of the film, a domestic worker of indigenous origin
(mixtec), working for an European descendancy family, living at the Roma
neighborhood, in Mexico City. Our proposal is to take advantage of the main
charactersilenceand exploretheurban andrural spaceswhereshe circulates.We
willanalyzethelimitsimposed,determinedbyherethnicityandsocialclass inthis
cinematographictrip,inwhichwewillgothroughseveralreflections:firstlyonthe
rightto thecity, andinunfolding, onthe otherrights evoked bythe film:housing,
leisure,healthandeducation.

1. Introduction
The dynamics of cities and urban spaces may or may not encourage the
complianceof the Declaration of HumanRights, since it has nolegalforce and its
articlesmayormaynotbefollowedineachcityorcountry.Thephysicalandorganic
formofthecityhasalwaysfascinatedartisticproductionthroughitsquestionsand
thewayit impactsthe livesofitsinhabitantsand onthe otherhand,humanrights
havebeenthedramaticplotfor severalplaysandfilmssince theappearanceofthe
Greek theater. In this context and taking the route presented in the film Roma,
through the daily life of the main character Cleo, in this article we will seek to
accompany her through the city,  the countryside and the seaside, analyzing the
humanrightsthatappearinthefilm.Thedirectorhasusedmostofthetimethe
resource of a dialect analyses, always comparing opposite angles of the same
situation.
2. ThecityandtheModernistmovement
Under the spatial vision that will guide this analysis, given the historical
periodinwhichthenarrativetakesplace,itisimportanttosituatethearchitectural
andurbanisticviewofthe70s.Withthemodernistmovementalreadyinaphaseof
assimilationinmostLatincitiesAmerican,MexicoCityincludedandtheimpacton
the lives of urban population is already beginning to be visible. The modernist
movementstartedasananswer tothegrowingpopulation inthecitiesall overthe
worldasaresultoftheindustrialrevolution.Tryingtosolvetheproblemofhousing
andtransport,themodernistmovementassumesthatlifecanbecontrolledandcan
functionasaperfectmachineaswellasitscitizenswhoshouldbehaveasmachines
themselves.
