INTRODUCTION
The teaching of Content Language Integrated Learning (henceforth CLIL)
subjects involves the uprooting of teaching practices traditionally linked to pure
language (Cenoz, 2013; Marsh & Frigols, 2013) and content (Escobar, 2015) teaching.
The nature of CLIL as a dual educational approach (Coyle, Hood, & Marsh, 2010)
demands ways of teaching that take into account the need to integrate content and
one or more foreign languages (Papaja, 2015). Teachers must therefore get trained by
ensuring that they understand the CLIL theoretical (Pavón & Rubio, 2010) and
scientific underpinnings (Pérez-Cañado, 2018), as well as recognising their own
training needs (Lorenzo, 2019).
Among the several CLIL subjects, mathematics is one of the most challenging for
several reasons (Estrada, 2021; Jäppinen, 2005): First, the position of mathematics
within the school curriculum (Prochazkova, 2013). Second, the characteristics of the
CLIL subject per se (Llinares, 2015), which might influence both teachers and students
(Ruiz de Zarobe, 2015). Thus, general and subject-specific aspects should be
considered in terms of CLIL teacher training (Fernández, 2010).
Some Spanish universities have taken up the challenge of training future CLIL
teachers from undergraduate studies (Delicado & Pavón, 2016; Lasagabaster, 2014;
Romero & Zayas, 2017). The University of Cádiz, Andalusia (Spain) offers a
specialization or mención (four subjects) in foreign language and CLIL (Romero &
Zayas, 2017) in Years 3 and 4 (Table 1) of the Bachelors Degree in Primary Education.
The subject AICLE I: Fundamentos y Propuestas Curriculares para el Aula de Primaria
(henceforth AICLE I) is the first CLIL experience for many students:
