Under copyright law, any copy, reproduction, publication, broadcasting, and public distribution of protected material is unlawful unless an authorization has been obtained or a license has been granted by the owner of the exploitation rights. These underlying principles of copyright are applicable both in the 'off-line' and 'on-line' world. As a basic definition, copyright is a legal term stipulating rights given to creators for their artistic, scientific and literary works.

Remedies Against Infringement of Protected Components.

Under the laws of many countries, the violation of copyright attracts criminal and civil sanctions.

In the criminal context, the unauthorized reproduction, plagiarism, distribution of and public communication of works, and computer piracy, are acts that are criminally punishable under various countriesø laws. Under the laws of some countries, the act itself is sufficient to attract criminal sanctions. In others, an intent to profit is required. The strictness in the application of the law varies between those countries that prosecute infringers who knowingly violate rights that belong to others, and those countries that do not require such knowledge but will prosecute infringers who know that the work is not their own.
